Introduction: Celebrating a Legacy
Welcome to Systemize Her, Season 2! This episode is deeply special to me. I’m recording it on October 22, which would’ve been my mom’s 65th birthday. While she passed away three years ago, I continue to celebrate her legacy through the lessons she taught me—lessons that have shaped not only my life but also my approach to business.
In today’s post, I’ll share three key lessons from my mom that can also offer a fresh perspective on entrepreneurship. These lessons are timeless, valuable, and, yes, surprisingly applicable to business growth. Let’s dive in!
1. Beat Up the Bully: Overcoming Intimidation in Business
My mom always encouraged us to “beat up the bully”—not literally, but as a way to overcome intimidation. The idea was to confront fears head-on, focusing on the biggest challenge in front of us. In business, the “bully” often represents a competitor or industry leader who seems intimidating at first.
Instead of shrinking away from the challenge, consider these strategies:
Identify your “bully.” It might be a leader in your niche who sets the standard for success.
Study them. Don’t just view them as competitors; learn from their strategies, successes, and even their missteps.
Find gaps. Look for opportunities they might have missed and fill those gaps with your unique offerings.
This mindset shift helps you view competitors as benchmarks for growth, not barriers to success.
Tip: Stop seeing others in your field as competition; see them as guides and inspirations. What can you learn from them to enhance your own journey?

2. Sit Like a Bird on a Wire: Embrace Rest and Reflection
My mom’s old boss would say, “You’re sitting there like a bird on a wire,” meaning you’re doing nothing productive. But sometimes, doing “nothing” is exactly what we need. In a fast-paced world, it’s easy to forget that rest is a crucial part of growth.
As entrepreneurs, we often get caught up in constant action. But taking time to pause and reflect can lead to clearer decisions and more creative ideas. Here’s how to incorporate more “bird on a wire” moments:
Schedule downtime: Block out moments in your calendar for breaks and stick to them.
Practice mindful pauses: Even five minutes of stillness can provide clarity and reduce overwhelm.
Reflect regularly: Take time to think about what’s working and what isn’t in your business.
Rest isn’t just about recovery; it’s about preparation for your next big move.
Tip: The most productive moments often follow periods of deep rest. Give yourself permission to slow down so you can speed up later.
3. Do Your Research: Make Informed Decisions
The most practical lesson my mom ever taught me was, “Do your research.” From deciding which college to attend to choosing the right business tools, research has always been key to making informed decisions. This lesson is foundational for any entrepreneur:
Know your tools: Before investing in a new system or software, learn about its features and benefits.
Understand your audience: Research your target market’s preferences, behaviors, and pain points.
Analyze competitors: Dig deep into what others in your niche are doing and consider how you can offer something unique.
Real-Life Application: I even do my research on TikTok! Whether it’s finding new lunch ideas for my 4-year-old or scouting for business inspiration, gathering insights before acting has become a habit.
Informed decisions save time, money, and stress, allowing you to move forward with confidence.
Honoring My Mom’s Legacy
These three lessons—beating up the bully, sitting like a bird on a wire, and doing your research—have not only shaped my personal journey but also my entrepreneurial path. As I navigate the ups and downs of business, I find myself returning to these simple yet profound teachings again and again.
