The Early Career Dilemma
It's wild how, after kindergarten through 12th grade, you're expected to pick a lifelong career at 17 or 18. You choose a major, study it, graduate, and put yourself on a specific path. While some pivot later in life or take on a second career, many hope they made the right choice from the start.
For me, I initially thought I wanted to be a doctor. Somehow, I pivoted into nursing, drawn by the promise of more patient care. Nursing turned out to be a versatile field—I've worked in public health, critical care, clinics, community outreach, and more. Eight years in, I still love it. But I know not everyone is as lucky.
The Passion vs. Paycheck Debate
Many people work jobs they don't hate but don't love either. They go through the motions, get their paycheck, and that's it. But doing something that lights you up is crucial. For me, building a business provides a different kind of fulfillment than my nursing career. It taps into my entrepreneurial spirit and excites me in new ways.
Entrepreneurship can be an escape for those who don't enjoy their day jobs. Some entrepreneurs chase money with no passion, selling random products just for profit. That's not our focus today. We're discussing centering your business around what you love, what you're good at, and what the world needs.

Finding Your Sweet Spot
Your sweet spot is where passion, profit, proficiency, and social proof intersect. Think of it as the gooey center of a perfect cookie—everything aligns and brings you joy.
1. Passion
Passion is a strong, barely controllable emotion. List things you feel strongly about, whether it's personal finance education for kids, supporting women out of abusive relationships, or hosting events to make adult friends. Brainstorm at least 5-10 passions.
2. Profit
Next, consider profit potential. Which passions can make you money? Which ones do you want to charge for? Evaluate overhead costs and time investment. For example, teaching personal finance classes may be more profitable than selling a book but requires more time.
3. Social Proof
Social proof shows there's a market for your idea. Don't be discouraged by competition; it proves demand exists. Look for evidence that people need and want your product or service.
4. Proficiency
What are you already good at? List your skills and strengths. Leverage what you do well in your day job or hobbies. For instance, my nursing skills in organization and education translate well to my business.
Evaluating Your Niche Ideas
1. Passion: Rank your ideas from 1 (least passionate) to 5 (most passionate).
2. Profit: Rank from 1 (least profit potential) to 5 (most profit potential).
3. Social Proof: Rank from 1 (least social proof) to 5 (most social proof).
4. Proficiency: Rank from 1 (least proficient) to 5 (most proficient).
Tally the scores for each idea. The highest total score indicates your ideal business niche—where your passion, profit potential, social proof, and proficiency align.
